Digital Rights Management

Microsoft Research DRM talk

by Cory Doctorow

This talk was originally given to Microsoft's Research Group and other interested parties from within the company at their Redmond offices on June 17, 2004. Canonical version of this talk: http://craphound.com/msftdrm.txt

Extremely thought-provoking article. I wonder how Microsoft will respond? Thanks to Daishi for posting the URL in IRC.

Hi friends,

The content was really very interesting. DRM is necessary to fight copyright infringement online and keep users safe at computer viruses, and that it can help the copyright holder maintain artistic control or ensure continued revenue streams. Thank you...

I disagree. Copyright holders can enforce their rights without DRM. DRM has no effect on viruses; in fact, in many ways DRM is seen AS a virus.

And many will judge you as a spammer, since you link to a sales site. I decided to publish your post anyway, since you voice a commonly-repeated defense of DRM.
